Orway Mineral Consultants Specialising in Comminution, Beneficiation and Hydrometallurgy
)) training services
OMC is currently working towards providing a holistic approach to their services and as such have developed an education and training package which is designed to improve understanding of operating and optimising Crushing and Grinding Circuits for all site personnel working in this area.

Drill Core Ore Characterisation
Drill Core Sample

The course aims to provide a progressive understanding of individual unit operations, their relationship with each other and provide tools to optimise the circuit as a whole. It will be tailored to focus on your individual site flowsheet and process equipment and will deal specifically with a number of key outcomes including:

• Understanding the Unit Processes and Process Variables
• Control Philosophy & Optimal Operation – Keeping the Circuit Running it’s Best
• Analysing the Circuit – Benchmarking and Identifying Problem Areas
• Approach to Optimisation

The process training package is targeted at Plant Operators, Metallurgists, Technicians and Operations Management that deal specifically with the comminution circuit. It is ideally designed to complement other OMC services and the intention is for it to be used as the third stage of the optimisation process (i.e. Audit, Detailed Optimisation and Training).

Concentrating on Comminution

Comminution is an area of plant operation which is often overlooked or misunderstood. As long as production targets are met, all is considered well. However, comminution circuits consume significant power and can contribute 50% of the operating cost on many concentrators. These costs are typically related to power and steel consumption. If production targets are not being met this impact is magnified with operating costs per tonne inflated across the concentrator.

Optimal operation of a comminution circuit requires a good understanding of the process by operators and an ongoing scrutiny of the process by technical staff.

Optimal operation of a comminution circuit can sometimes appear to be a daunting task without the knowledge required to undertake a project. This course focuses on the practical knowledge and the understanding of the process required to maximise production and optimise efficiency.

Training Outcomes

Unit Processes
1.1 Identify crushing, grinding, screening and classification units in the circuit.
1.2 Describe the key function of each unit in the circuit.
1.3 List the variables associated with each unit in the circuit
1.4 Understand the consequence of each variable on circuit performance.

Control Philosophy
2.1 Understand how the variables of each unit interact to affect the circuit.
2.2 Follow a logical sequence of variable changes to problem solve performance issues that may arise in the circuit.

Benchmarking & Circuit Analysis
3.1 Understand how ore properties dictate circuit power requirements.
3.2 Understand the importance of a circuit survey.
3.3 Identify all survey data required and develop techniques for qualityplanning and execution.
3.4 Utilise the mass balance to identify areas of poor performance.
3.5 Understand the concept of FSAG and how the actual value compares with the theoretical calculation.
3.6 Analyse Cyclone performance using efficiency calculations.

Optimisation
4.1 Describe the three main ways that a circuit can be optimised (i.e. throughput, product size, power efficiency).
4.2 Understand key steps to optimise a circuit for throughput.
4.3 Understand key steps to optimise a circuit for product size.
4.4 Understand key steps to optimise a circuit for power efficiency.
